John McLeod
John McLeod is professor of history at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. The native of Toronto, Canada, specializes in the history of India. He earned his undergraduate degree, master’s degree, and Ph.D. in history from the University of Toronto. He is the author of three books: Sovereignty, Power Control: Politics in the States of Western India 1916-1947, published by Brill in 1999; The History of India, 2nd edition, published by Greenwood in 2015; and Modern India, published by AC-CLIO in 2020. His publications on the African experience in India includes a single-authored article, “Marriage and Identity among the Sidis of Janjira and Sachin,” in John Hawley, editor, India in Africa, Africa in India: Indian Ocean Cosmopolitanisms, published by Indiana University Press in 2008; a co-authored book chapter (with Kenneth X. Robbins), “The Image of the Black in India,” in David Bindman, Suzanne Preston Blier, and Henry Louis Gates, Jr., editors, The Image of the Black in African and Asian Art, published by Harvard University Press in 2017; and one co-edited book (with Kenneth X. Robbins), African Elites in India: Habshi Amarat, published by Mapin in 2006.
